About the Authors

Hethe Henrickson has been a professional Windows Server administrator since 1997. Currently, he is a Windows Server lead for a large multinational corporation. He is an MCSE in both Windows 2000 and Window NT 4. His IIS work started in 1997 with IIS 3.0, and he’s worked on well more than 100 web sites since that time. He has worked extensively with Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 servers.

Hethe has been a book technical editor, and he was a technical instructor at National American University, where he taught Windows NT and Windows 2000 MCSE classes. He has also been a columnist for swynk.com.

Hethe’s big drive in the Windows Server arena is to automate processes and maintenance of servers so mammals don’t have to keep touching servers. He strives to automate many of the ordinary tasks that administrators do each day, especially if it involves scripting with VBScript.

Hethe lives in Wisconsin with his wife and children.

Scott Hofmann has been involved in more than a dozen significant enterprise web application efforts that consisted of $1 million–plus development efforts. Among these projects, ownerconnection.com and Rapportnet.com were the most notable. With more than ten years of programming experience, Scott has served in many efforts as a programmer and has led most projects as a senior system architect and development manager, overseeing design, code production, and maintenance. Scott writes code using C++, Visual Basic, JavaScript, SQL, VBScript, Pascal, and Java on server hosts running Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 Server; Solaris; Red Hat, Debian, and Mandrake Linux; and FreeBSD.

Scott has been a technical editor for IDG Books, Hungry Minds, and Wiley Publishing. Among his written works is a whitepaper for Microsoft called “Interoperation Using .NET” and an article about using ESRI’s MapObjects in Visual Basic. Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Michigan State University in 1991 and obtained a Microsoft MCSD certification in 1998.

Scott lives with his wife and children in Michigan. Scott may be contacted through his web site, mapobject.com, or via e-mail at scott@mapobject.com.

About the Technical Editor

Steve Wright is a consultant with 15 years experience for Planet Consulting Inc. in Omaha, Nebraska. He holds many current certifications from Microsoft, including MCDBA, MCSD, MCSE, MCAD, and MCSA. He is primarily an architect and technical lead for line-of-business application projects using Microsoft technologies. Steve has also worked for Microsoft developing demonstration applications for unreleased products. Steve holds bachelor’s degrees in math and computer science and a master’s degree in computer science.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank Scott Hofmann for joining me on this project; it would not have been nearly the book it is without your work. I would also like to thank my agent, Neil Salkind, and also Mitch Tulloch, for introducing me to Neil and getting me started in this business.

I would like to thank my editor, Jane Brownlow, for leading me through this project. I’d also like to thank everyone at McGraw-Hill/Osborne, including Jessica Richards, Jessica Wilson, Jody McKenzie, Lisa Theobald, Michael Mueller, Steve Wright, Tana Allen, and Tracy Dunkelberger. Thanks to Bernie Berg for all his help with encryption.

I would also like to thank some of the people in my life who have inspired me: Jesus, Orv and Linda Henrickson, Pres and Di Moerman, Ralph Schuler, Audie Baker, Rich Adcock, Carol Brenner, Dan Hacking, Rocky Larson, and many others that I don’t have the space to name here.

I would like to thank my wife, Andra, who is my biggest fan, and my children, who went through this process with me and understood during all those days when I couldn’t come outside and play.

—Hethe Henrickson

I would like to thank Hethe Henrickson for inviting me to join him in this project and Jane Brownlow for having me on this project. I would also like to thank my agent, Neil Salkind, for believing in me and introducing me to Hethe and Jane. I am truly grateful to all of you for having been granted the opportunity to participate in this project.

I would like to thank the folks who were involved with this book. The material is honed and beautified through their talents and expertise. Without them, the book would not be what it is. Specifically, I would like to thank the following editors: Jody McKenzie, for all of the late-night, last-minute edits; Jessica Wilson; Tracy Dunkelberger; Steve Wright; Tana Allen; Jessica Richards; and Lisa Theobald. I know there are also many others who participated, and I thank all of you as well.

I would like to acknowledge my late friend, Russ Cripe, who inspired me never to duck a challenge. Anytime the technology seemed too sophisticated or the project seemed too impossible to build, he would say, “Why not us? Someone has to do it. What makes them any better then us?”

I would like to thank my friend Jim Russell, who challenged me to write a book and read Machiavelli. We survived living and driving in Turkey for a few years, and I look forward to another adventure somewhere—sometime.

I would also like to thank my wife, Lori, for her support on this project. I cannot do good work without a good partner.

—Scott Hofmann
