Chapter 2. Getting Ready

In this chapter...

  • Learning Some Basic Networking Terms

  • How Wireless Networking Works

  • File Sharing

  • Internet Sharing

  • Networking Securely

To make sure your wireless networking goes smoothly, you should learn a few networking basics. For the most part, you don't need deep technical knowledge of how each software and hardware component does its job. Yet there are a few new terms and concepts that you should understand.

A few technical definitions will come in handy as you shop for equipment, and when you need to call your manufacturer's technical support for assistance. Of course, by keeping this book around while you set up your equipment, you can keep those tech support calls to a minimum.

More importantly, you're about to get a sense of how a simple wireless network works. We'll consider how wireless networks transfer data, and how you can share files, Internet access, and peripherals. We'll also look at how wireless networking security works. By the end of this chapter, you should have a pretty good understanding of what you need to know about wireless networks. Later in the book, we delve into more detail, and more how-to advice on setting up and maintaining your equipment.
