Be able to define the Initiation process. Initiation authorizes the project to move forward.

Be able to describe the events that drive new projects. Market demand, internal business need, legal requirement, new technology, external customer request, technological change, and social need are events that drive new projects.

Understand the three categories of requirements. Functional requirements define how the user will interact with the system. Business requirements are the big picture of what the business wants from the system. Technical requirements define what the system does to meet the business and functional requirements.

Be able to identify the most common project selection methods . The most common project selection methods are decision models such as benefit measurement or constrained optimization and expert judgment.

Be able to define a project stakeholder and list stakeholders common to most projects. A stakeholder is a person who is either actively involved in the project or is impacted by the project. Stakeholders include the sponsor, the project manager, project team members , functional managers, the customer, and end users.

Be able to describe a project charter and list the key components . A project charter provides formal approval for the project to begin and authorizes the project manager to apply resources to the project. The key components are the product description, the project team, goals and objectives, business case, and approval.

Understand the basic makeup of a project team upon reading the project charter project description. You need to quickly recognize the types of IT people you'll require for a given IT project such as programmers, network people, or telecommunications folks.
