About the Author

Gilbert Held is an internationally recognized author and lecturer who specializes in the application of computer and communications technology. The author of more than 30 books about personal computers, data communications, and business topics, Gil is the only person to twice receive the coveted Interface Karp Award. He has also received an award from the American Publisher’s Institute.

Gil managed a nationwide communications network for the federal government for over 20 years. This network supports one of the largest numbers of dial-in encryption devices in use throughout the free world. Gil is a frequent lecturer and often conducts seminars on such topics as LAN and WAN internetworking, data compression, and personal computer hardware and software. In recognition of his work, Gil was selected by Federal Computer Week as one of the top 100 persons in government, industry, and academia whose efforts made a difference in the acquisition and utilization of computer equipment. Gil teaches graduate school courses at Georgia College and State University in such areas as LAN performance and data communications.

Acknowledgments

From proposal to publication a book requires the efforts of many individuals besides the author. Since I spend a majority of my writing time at home, the cooperation and assistance of my family was essential and once again is greatly appreciated. Concerning that assistance, a special acknowledgment and loud “thanks” goes to my son, Jonathan Held. Jonathan took up his father’s challenge after taking a graduate course covering C++. Over a series of many evenings Jonathan both converted and improved upon the original BASIC language programs and program modules as he developed the C++ programs and program modules included in this book.

As an old-fashioned author, I like to write my manuscript and depend upon the professional skills of Mrs. Linda Hayes to turn my longhand notes and diagrams into a suitable manuscript. Thus, once again I am indebted to Linda Hayes for her fine work.

Editing a complex manuscript takes a very special skill, especially when the manuscript consists of numerous files, line art, text, and sidebars that have to be carefully put together. This author sincerely thanks Beth Kohler for her fine editing effort during the publication process.

While many persons can write manuscripts, only a select few have the ability and position to judge the viability of a book proposal, arrange for the editing of a manuscript, and coordinate the thousand and one items ranging from the book cover design to its production schedule that enable the finished product to reach the market. It is with sincere appreciation that I thank Mr. Jim Hill for his cooperation and assistance as well as his vision and foresight in noting the role of this book in fulfilling the requirements of readers.
