Appendix A: Review Problems

The purpose of this appendix is twofold. First, the questions in this appendix provide readers with the ability to test their knowledge as they read each chapter. Second, questions in this appendix can be used by instructors as templates. Such templates provide the ability to develop homework assignments or examinations to test the knowledge of students or reinforce specific information covered in a course using this book.

Questions in this appendix are in chapter order, using the numbering system c.n, where c references the chapter and n simply references the question number for a specific chapter. Questions are included for Chapters 2 through 11, as the first chapter in this book primarily provides an overview of succeeding chapters and the last two chapters are oriented toward monitoring tools and optimization techniques.

Chapter 2: Ethernet, Token Ring, and ATM Frame and Cell Operations

2.1

Briefly describe how you could develop a program to discover the number of unique stations connected to an Ethernet or Token Ring LAN.

2.2

Define the functions of the following Ethernet fields:

  • Preamble

  • Start of frame delimiter

  • Destination address

  • Source address

  • Type/length

  • Frame check sequence

2.3

What does a destination address of all binary 1's indicate ?

2.4

Briefly describe how you could develop a program to identify the manufacturer of the network adapter card that transmitted a LAN frame.

2.5

What is the purpose of the Gigabit Ethernet carrier extension field?

2.6

True or False: The efficiency of shared media Gigabit Ethernet is proportional to the length of the frames flowing on the network.

2.7

Explain how you could take advantage of the Ethernet frame overhead shown in Tables 2.1 and 2.2 when designing client/server applications.

2.8

What type of traffic adversely affects throughput obtainable on a Gigabit Ethernet LAN? Why does it adversely affect throughput?

2.9

Assume an Ethernet network's level of utilization begins to exceed 60 percent. List three options that you could use to reduce the level of network utilization.

2.10

What is the purpose of the Token Ring active monitor?

2.11

Describe the difference between a universally administrated address and a locally administrated address.

2.12

Given that an ATM cell has a 5-byte header and 48-byte payload, plot the percentage of overhead to total information bytes when your application needs to transfer 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 bytes of data.

2.13

How can ATM provide a Quality-of-Service capability?
