Opening Web Pages | Microsoft Expression Web For Dummies

You can easily open any Web page in Expression Web. It also knows how to open non-Web page files that are part of your Web site (such as picture files or Microsoft Office documents) by launching the appropriate program for that type of file.

Opening a page that's part of the current Web site

Expression Web gives you several ways to open pages and files that make up your Web site. Here are the easiest methods:

First, open the Web site that contains the page you want to open. (If you're not sure how to open a Web site, see Chapter 1.) Next, double-click a page or file icon in the Folder List task pane or in the Web Site tab in the editing window.
You can open one page at a time, or you can open several pages and move between them by clicking their tabs in the editing window.
To open a non-Web page contained in your Web site (such as a Microsoft Word document), double-click it in the Folder List task pane. Expression Web launches the appropriate program and opens the file in that program.

Opening a page stored on your computer or network

You may want to open a page that's part of an Expression Web site, but not the Web site that's already open in Expression Web. No problem. You can even open a Web page that isn't part of a Web site created with Expression Web.

To do so, follow these steps:

On the Common or Standard toolbar, click the arrow next to the Open button and click Open.

You can also choose File Open or press Ctrl+O.

The Open File dialog box appears, displaying a list of files and folders contained in the Web site that's open in Expression Web. If no Web site is open, the dialog box displays the contents of the last folder you viewed.
In the dialog box, navigate to the location of the file you want to open.

The page can be stored anywhere on your computer or network.
In the dialog box's file list, click the file and then click the Open button.

The Open File dialog box closes, and the page opens.

If the page is part of a Web site, regardless of whether it was created with Expression Web, the Web site opens in a new workspace window with the selected page open in the editing window. The Web site's files and folders appear in the Folder List task pane.
