If you're a former user of Microsoft FrontPage, you may be missing some of your buddies from the Web Components menu. Table 15-1 lists a few of the most popular bots along with solutions for finding replacements.
Web Component | How to Replace It |
---|---|
Web search | Google Free WebSearch and SiteSearch (explained in this chapter) are good substitutes and put the power of the Google search engine into your site. |
Hit counter or Top 10 lists | Hit counters are passé, and are more useful for Top 10 list you than for your visitors. Ask your Web host for detailed log files that provide you with valuable information about your visitors' browsing habits. |
Photo gallery | Plenty of good photo gallery options are available on the Web. See the sidebar about photo galleries in Chapter 5. |
Link bars | Expression Web doesn't give you the option of automatically generating and customizing link bars. See the sidebar about link bars in Chapter 4. Chapter 8 covers ideas for creating navigation bars with CSS. Another option: drop-down navigation menus; see the section "Create Drop-Down Menus," earlier in this chapter. |
Included content | This component (affectionately referred to as includes) provided a way to reuse page content without creating a template. Microsoft has agreed to bring back includes soon. See the Expression Web development team Weblog for news about this and other features: http://www.blogs.msdn.com/xweb. |
REMEMBER | You can open, edit, and publish your FrontPage-created site by using Expression Web. Any Web components already in place and working continue to work as they did in FrontPage. However, you cannot add new Web components by using Expression Web, because the FrontPage Web components produce less-than-standard-compliant code. |
