Enabling, Editing, and Testing Buttons

Button symbols can also be tested within the Flash authoring environment. To test a button, select Control, Enable Simple Buttons in the top menu bar. This lets you see what the Over and Down states will look like and if they work without exporting or testing the entire Flash document. Be sure to deselect this option if you want to continue editing this button. If Enable Simple Buttons is still active, it becomes difficult to select the button on the stage to edit it. To select a button that is enabled, use the arrow tool and draw a selection rectangle around the button.

NOTE

If you embed a movie clip in any of the button's Up, Over, or Down states, you will not be able to see the movie clip when you activate Enable Simple Buttons. In order to see the movie clip in action, you have to export or test the whole movie document.

To edit a button, you can either double-click it while it's on the stage to bring it into symbol editing mode, or you can go to the Library and double-click its icon to bring it into symbol editing mode. Once in symbol editing mode, you can manipulate the button's attributes as you would any other object in your Flash document.
