TERRORISTS

There are religious and political, international and domestic terrorists of several varieties and levels of extremism. Psychologists, sociologists, law-enforcement professionals, legal advisors, scientists, politicians and theologians spend their days and nights trying to define, predict, explain and manage people who act in ways contrary to peace , serenity, safety, harmony and social well-being. There is no one, correct, universal answer. Any attempt at a complete answer would have to include all information that is psychological, physiological, genetic, cultural, emotional, theoretical, theological, and symbolic. The answer would have to be comprehensive. That answer does not exist. Only the question remains: why are some people hell-bent on causing problems and grief and chaos?

Terrorists are the bad guys to the victims of terrorism. Terrorists are not the bad guys to themselves and their causes. They have entitlement and are bulletproof to the extreme and they have an agenda, or mission. If you get in the way of that agenda, you may be a victim. Business texts which have attempted to couch this discussion in palpable terms have used words like 'workplace jerks,' 'bullies' or 'difficult employees .' Can you imagine calling the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks bullies, jerks, or difficult people from another country? No. They were terrorists! They had an agenda to destroy the well-being of innocent people and the consequences continue to evolve years later.

It is difficult for most rational, healthy , or moderately dysfunctional people to accept a worldview that there are people on the planet who enjoy causing pain and grief. In the abstract, people may agree there is evil, or bad people, or criminals, or icky-bad people, but most people have extreme difficulty believing that some people actually enjoy and choose such behaviors. And they have even more difficulty believing that someone would impose an agenda on them without consent . Nice people agree that there are obnoxious and aggressive people in the world, but still define them within the range of allowable differences. To discuss the presence of people who subtly, consciously, intentionally and willfully cause harm either overtly or covertly is usually too much of a challenge to normative thinking. Of course, those individuals who have had head-on run-ins with such people are well aware of their presence. The employees and citizens of New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon are now well aware that terrorists exist. Amazingly, there are still people outside that circle of direct experience who are not comfortable thinking that there are people running about the planet with hidden agendas and covert plans to cause horror . These na ve innocents are to be blessed and then quickly educated !
