AUTHOR'S AFTERTHOUGHTS

Preparation is just good thinking. The interruption of business to practice physical evacuations or emotional debriefing appears to be an annoyance until you actually need these skills in reality. Drills with first responders, the American Red Cross, and with Critical Incident Stress Management teams have taken my valuable time. I have whined about volunteering my time to "practice." Then an incident happens and I can't say enough about the value of drills. I practiced. Now it makes sense. Now it is rational and not a waste of my time. I get it.

Whenever I return from a disaster I am humbled by how grateful I am that someone went ahead of me and tipped me about what it would look like. The faces and names , the debris and the details may be slightly different but the general texture is the same. And what is always the same is that people are having emotions. I have drilled and rehearsed my Emotional Continuity Management practices and am not surprised when a human emotion is presented to me. I know what to do. And if it is beyond me I know who to call. I am not bullet-proof so I anticipate that I might have some emotions. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I do not. But no matter what, my mission is to be helpful and not add to the disaster. I have my feelings. They matter mostly to me. Ignoring my emotions is neither healthy nor useful. Extensive research on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder backs me up on this.

My colleagues who specialize in IT (Information Technology) Disaster Planning and Business Continuity Management have taught me well. My physical well-being is my hardware. My emotions are my software, and I participate willingly in drills to protect them both.
