AUTHOR'S AFTERTHOUGHTS

The first time I started using the Tornado as a metaphor for emotional storms was right after I experienced my first tornado event in Bloomington, Indiana. I had already experienced significant earthquakes, a couple of typhoons and other disasters, but this was my first tornado. I was with 300 bright and happy people headed out for a night of music and art. The sirens went off and the fun ended. No one was hurt. No one died. In fact, after the emergency, there were no visible signs that anything had happened . But I had observed 300 different emotional reactions to the same event. When it was over and everyone went home I was aware that I had witnessed something important and had my eyes opened for similar circumstances.

The next time I observed a similar phenomenon with the same emotional "feeling" was in a work site where a new administrator had been hired . Within only a few hours of his entry a bright and shiny workplace was turned into a chaotic emotional nightmare. There was no visible damage. No one died. People went home at night. But unlike the tornado event, everyone had to come back to the storm the next morning! Within a few weeks the emotional and fiscal toll was extreme.
