ReWire Master/Slave and Audio Connections

ReWire has two application modes: Master and Slave. Master mode is the application to which all audio is routed for mixing, and the Master controls the synchronization of all connected ReWire applications. The Slave application sends its audio to the Master application and follows the Master's synchronization. The mode is set by the application itself and usually cannot be changed; however, some programs run as either Slave or Master. Reason is a Slave-only application.

Starting Reason in ReWire Slave Mode

Starting Reason in ReWire Slave mode is straightforward. Simply start the ReWire Master application first, and then start Reason. When Reason loads on your computer, it checks to see if a ReWire Master application is already running. If a Master application is running, Reason will automatically be set to run in ReWire Slave mode. When Reason is running in ReWire Slave mode, the hardware interface will indicate this.

NOTE

There are several ReWire Master applications available. If you're running an application that supports ReWire, check that application's documentation for more information on what modes it supports.

ReWire Audio Input and Output Connections

In Chapter 2 you looked at the hardware interface at the top of the rack, which is used to connect the devices to the output of your audio card. With ReWire you'll still need to use the hardware interface to connect the device to the ReWire channels. Reason supports 64 outputs; therefore, 64 channels to the Master application are available with Reason in ReWire Slave mode.
