Enabling Remote Control

Remote control allows you to use your MIDI controller to control a device's parameters. In recent years , many MIDI controllers have been developed and marketedmost of them come equipped with various knobs and sliders designed for just such a task.

A Bit of MIDI Protocol Background

Before you venture into the land of remote control, there are a few basics you should know. Reason's remote control feature uses the MIDI protocol as its base of communication. Your MIDI controller sends various MIDI commands from all of its controls to Reason. Reason then receives and acts on those commands. The simplest example of this is triggering the sound modules from the keys on your MIDI controller. Some of these commands can be used for other things as well, such as controlling the parameters of a device or driving Reason's transport controls. However, because of the large variety of MIDI controllers on the market, Reason does not immediately know what to do with some of these commands. (Note-triggering MIDI commands are standard across the industry, so Reason understands those right out of the box.) You need to tell Reason how to interpret these other kinds of MIDI commands.

Setting Up MIDI

Although I covered setting up MIDI in Chapter 2, this chapter will briefly cover settings specific to MIDI remote control.

First you need to select the MIDI interface that is connected to your MIDI controller.

By default, Reason has remote control disabled, so you'll need to activate it.
