Chaining Mixer Sends

[ LiB ]

There may be some situations in which the 14 channels on the mixer are not enough, so you may need to load two mixers. One issue you will come across when working with more than one mixer is managing the sends. For example, if you have a SubTractor connected to a channel of your first mixer, and a Dr:rex Loop Player connected to a channel on the second mixer, and you want to send both devices to the same effect (connected as a send), how would you do it?

In Reason, the mixers can be linked together; when you do this, the auxiliary sends are also linked. Therefore, connecting an effect device to Send 1 on one mixer would also connect the effect to the Send 1 of the second mixer.

Automatic Linking

To set up the link between mixers automatically:

Now add the second mixer.

NOTE

When the second (or any subsequently added mixer) is connected to the Chaining Master of the first mixer, only the first mixer will control the overall volume of all connected mixers. However, each other mixer's master volume fader will control that mixer's volume.

NOTE

When adding a second mixer to the rack, the position of the mixer is irrelevant to the default routing. By default, automatic linking of mixers will take place whenever more than one mixer is added to the rack.

Manual Chaining

In most cases the automatic chaining of multiple mixers will be sufficient; however, there may be situations in which you want the second mixer's sends to connect to effects other than the ones connected to the first mixer.

Before you can reconnect the sends of Mixer 2, you need to disconnect the automatic routing.

Now Mixer 2's Aux Sends are free to be connected to an effect device.

NOTE

The above exercise demonstrates how to disconnect the automatic routing of Chaining Aux 1. Perform a similar operation to disconnect the routing from any of the other Chaining Aux connections.
