When you wish to apply effects to your sound module devices, there are two possible routing methods : Insert mode and Send mode. I'll discuss Insert mode first. In this mode, the effect is "inserted" between the sound module and the mixer so that all the audio from the sound module passes through the effect device before being routed to the mixer. In this mode, the inserted effect will be applied only to the sound module to which it is connected.
To learn how to route audio to an effect using the insert, you'll first need to load some devices into an empty rack.
NOTE
As with the previous exercises, it is a good idea to start with an empty rack.
NOTE
When you start a new song, loading a mixer into the rack first makes routing of subsequent devices easier.
Next you'll need to check the default routing of the mixer.
Click on the Options menu. The Options menu will appear.
Click on Toggle Rack Front/Rear . The rear view of the rack will be displayed.
NOTE
Remember that the Tab key will also toggle the rack between front and rear views.
After the mixer is loaded, you will add a SubTractor synthesizer while still in the rear view mode.
NOTE
By now you should be comfortable using the Create menu, and for all exercises you'll be using the same menu when adding devices; however, you can also add devices to the rack by right-clicking (Control-clicking on Mac) in an empty portion of the rack, then choosing the required device from the drop-down menu.
While still in rear view mode, add the reverb effect to the rack.
NOTE
When any effect device is loaded into the rack directly below a sound module, by default that effect device will be connected as an insert effect to the module above it. If a second effect device is added after the first, the two effect units will be connected to each other in Insert mode.
In Insert mode, even though an effect unit is connected directly to a sound module device (or perhaps another effect device), it is possible to control the blend (mix) of the devices using the dry/wet parameter found on most of the effects.
NOTE
When using dynamic effect devices such as a compressor or EQ, it is best to route the audio as an insert in order to process all the audio of a device.
