Recording to the Sequencer

[ LiB ]

Before you can record anything to the sequencer, you will need at least one device loaded in the rack. In this chapter, you will use the SubTractor synthesizer as the device with which to record.

NOTE

When a device is loaded into the rack, a track will be automatically created in the sequencer for that device. However, if that device is deleted from the rack, the track that was created for it will remain .

Track Information

Before getting into recording your performance, there are a few areas you should get familiar with to make your workflow easier. For every track in the sequencers there is a section in which information pertaining to that track is displayed. The information is divided into columns .

NOTE

The In column also controls MIDI Thru. MIDI Thru allows you to determine which device to play through when you play from your MIDI controller. If you have several sound devices loaded in the rack, you must enable the In column on the track connected to the device you wish to hear as you play.

NOTE

The In device is indicated by a small MIDI cable plug icon in the In column. When recording, be sure that this icon appears on the track that you wish to record to. If the In is enabled on another track, the performance will not be recorded to the correct track.

NOTE

Changing the name of the track will also change the name of the device the track is connected to.

NOTE

In the Out column there is also a small icon that resembles the device that the track is connected to. This will help you with a quick visual representation of the current connected device.

Recording

Next you'll learn how to record your performance to the track.

NOTE

If you wish to stop recording but keep playing the song, just click the Record button a second time.

When you have finished recording, you will notice that small colored lines have appeared on the SubTractor track in the sequencer. These lines represent your performance's MIDI information.

NOTE

Recording will automatically begin at the playback cursor. If you wish to start your performance at bar 5, for example, set the playback cursor to bar 4 or 3. This will give you some time to start the recording and prepare to play your performance at the start of bar 5.

NOTE

If no key was played during recording, the track will remain empty. If you did play the keyboard but find that the track is empty after recording, refer back to "Track Information" earlier in this chapter to ensure that you have prepared the track correctly for recording. If the track is correctly set, refer back to "Configuring MIDI" in Chapter 1 to confirm that your MIDI connections are set up appropriately.

Locators and Loop Recording

The locators perform various functions in Reason; however, they are most commonly used when performing loop recording. When loop recording, the portion of the song between the L and R locators will play over and over until recording is stopped .

Loop Recording records in a continuous loop between the locators until you have stopped the recording.

When the playback cursor has reached the right locator, it will automatically jump back to the left locator while continuing to record.

Overdub or Replace

When recording in Loop mode, you can choose whether you'd like to have your performance replace data that was recorded on the previous pass or be added to that data.

NOTE

The Overdub and Replace recording modes apply to all recordings, whether it's recording in Loop mode or Standard mode.
