Whom Is This Book For?

This book is for you if

  • You are an IT professional who's already familiar with basic system and network administration concepts and who has a basic working knowledge of information security terms, concepts, tools, and technologies.

  • Your job or work involves working in and around the Internet, particularly if it is related to managing or securing such access.

  • Your job or work carries some explicit security considerations with it, be it managing access or permissions for a single system or for one or more networks and related servers.

  • You are interested in moving into the information security specialization within IT and are seeking a good place to start your training and learning experiences.

This book is not for you if

  • You are just getting started in computing and have little experience with systems or networks, or with information security terms, concepts, tools, and technologies.

  • You are working in IT but have no systems or network administration experience, or explicitly security-related job duties or responsibilities.

  • You seek a learning tool to teach you all the background, terms, and concepts necessary to understand information security as represented in the Security+ exam.

  • You are curious about this suddenly popular IT specialization called "information security" and want to find out what the fuss is about.

If you fall into the category that indicates this book is not for you, you should start your Security+ certification path somewhere else. You might consider our other book, Security+ Training Guide (Que Certification, 2002, ISBN 0-7897-2836-2). It is full of explanations , background information, lots of examples and illustrations, and plenty of case studies and scenarios. (You will not find much of that type of information in this book, because it assumes you already know such things.)
