Timing Automatic Presentations

If you want to switch automatically from one slide to another, you can set a specific time for each slide to be displayed. To make it easier for you to figure out how much time each slide should spend onscreen, Impress has a Rehearse Timings feature that displays a counter, and automatically records the time you spend displaying each slide. This lets you rehearse the presentation ahead of time and fine-tune the timing.

You can make adjustments later if necessary.

  1. Apply effects, if you want, to individual elements of the slides.

  2. Set slide transition effects.

The type of timingmanual, etc.can be anything; it will be overridden with Automatic and the time set by this process.

  3. Prepare to deliver your presentation; assemble any notes you'll need, etc.

  4. Switch to Slide view.

  5. Click the Rehearse Timings icon in the object bar.

  6. Deliver the information you'll be talking about during this slide, then note the time displayed when you're done.

The presentation will start running, with the a timer showing how many seconds the slide has been displayed, in the lower left corner of the screen. Note the time when you're done speaking. The time recorded for each slide begins, not when the slide is displayed, but when all effects are complete, so take that into account when you note the time.

  7. Click the timer to move to the next slide. Repeat the process for each slide.

  8. Use the Slide Transition window to adjust the time for each slide, if necessary. (For slides with extensive individual object or text effects, during which you'll be talking, you may want to decrease the time slightly.)

    Note

In general, it's a good idea to err on the generous side when setting timing; you can manually switch to the next slide before the timing is over but you can't delay the transition.

  9. Click the Rehearse Presentations icon again, and run the presentation and your delivery again to be sure the timing is correct.
