How Effects Are Applied to Text

Effects are applied to all text in the text frame, sequentially paragraph by paragraph. For instance, if you click somewhere in the second subpoint in a text frame that has three subpoints and apply an effect, the effect will be sequentially applied to all three subpoints, to the first subpoint first.
