Outlining

Calc's outline feature is simply a way to let you select the rows and columns you want to expand and contract. This feature is particularly useful when you've got a large spreadsheet that has multiple parts . For example, if a single sheet contains detailed income and expense information, you can group rows by month so you can expand and contract those rows. In addition, you could group the entire income area, making it easy to contract so you can get to the expense section more quickly.

  1. Select the rows or columns you want to group.

  2. Choose Data > Outline > Group.

If you grouped rows, the outline pane is displayed to the left of the spreadsheet, letting you expand and contract the groups.

If you grouped columns, the outline pane is displayed above the spreadsheet.

  3. Create additional groups or subgroups.

Figure 22-10 illustrates how to expand and contract outline groups.

To ungroup an area, select its rows or columns and choose Data > Outline > Ungroup.

You can't switch between showing a sheet in outline view and hiding outline view. If you no longer want to use outlining for a sheet, or if you want to recreate outlining from scratch, choose Data > Outline > Remove.
