Page Formatting

The program provides a number of document-wide properties and setup options. See also the Writer sections Page Layout on page 233, Using Frames for Advanced Page Layout on page 239, and Example: Creating a Complex Page Layout on page 246.

Page Setup

Choose Format > Page to view page setup windows for HTML documents; use the Page, Header, and Footer tabs. The windows are the as in Writer; see Creating Page Styles on page 257.

Seeing How the Document Will Look Printed

Generally, an HTML document displayed in OpenOffice.org just fills up all the available space and wraps when it needs to, regardless of the settings you've entered in the Page tab of the Page styles window (choose Format > Page).

To see how the document will look when printed, with the page and margin settings you've applied, click the Print Layout On/Off icon on the toolbar.

For information on using Page Preview, which lets you print multiple pages on one sheet of paper and other options, see Fitting Multiple Pages Onto One Sheet on page 85.

Using Headers and Footers

You can use the Insert menu or the Insert Header and Insert Footer icons to reserve an area to print information on each page, such as page numbers , file name, and so on. This can be particularly useful with Web pages because they aren't divided into pages online, and it can be difficult to keep track of page order, the document name , and so on if you're distributing printed copies.

Headers and footers function similarly in Writer and Web. See Headers, Footers, and Fields on page 281 for more information.

Seeing Headers and Footers

Headers and footers are visible in the document only when Print Layout is activated using the Print Layout On/Off icon on the toolbar.

Adding to Headers and Footers

Use the header and footer in combination with the Insert Fields icon, which lets you insert fields containing page numbers, dates, etc.

Removing and Modifying Headers and Footers

To edit the information in the headers and footers, be sure you're in Print Layout view (see previous section); the headers and footers will be displayed. To remove a row in the header or footer, just delete it as you would a table row (select it, then click the Delete Row icon in the object bar).

You also can delete the header or footer through the Page Format window. Just choose Format > Page and click the Header and Footer tabs. Deselect Header on and Footer on.
