Chapter 2. Install PostNuke

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • New Installation

  • Upgrade Installation

  • Troubleshooting

  • Next

In this chapter, you walk through the steps to a successful install of PostNuke. Both new installs and upgrades for existing PostNuke systems are covered with the following topics:

  • Database preparation

  • PostNuke distribution

  • Language packs

  • Backing up PostNuke

It's a good idea to have any of the extra applications described in Chapter 1, "Preinstallation Requirements," ready before beginning the install. If you will be using an external host for your PostNuke server, you definitely need to have a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Secure SHell (SSH) client available as part of the install process. An externally hosted database also requires an administration tool, such as phpMyAdmin mentioned in Chapter 1, unless you have direct access to the machine through a terminal or virtual connection.

Tip

PostNuke requires site names to be fully qualified, as in http://www.myname.com/, unless you are running in Intranet Mode (not recommended for public sites). That means using http://localhost/ or http://myname.com/ does not work. If you are installing locally but do not have your own Domain Name System (DNS) server setup, you can edit your local hosts file to simulate the domain name. In Linux, the file is at /etc/hosts, and in Windows XP the file is at \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Use any ASCII text editor to edit the file.
