Section 9.10. Reference

9.10. Reference

Thousands of resources for .NET have surfaced since its introduction in early 2002, but very few of these are geared toward systems management. This frequently results in systems management being left to <gasp> the developers. This section covers what is out there, and how to find it.

You can find the most solid and up-to-date information directly at the source, the .NET SDK. MSDN publishes thousands of pages of SDK documentation online. I'll direct you to the 1% that deals with management. First, I'll throw out the URL to get you to the root of this thing:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/netstart/html/sdk_netstart.asp

This will take you to a node in the tree view entitled .NET Framework. This is the root of the documentation included with the .NET SDK download. The following lists, in order of importance, the most notable sections covering systems management:

.NET Framework Reference Configuration File Schema

Covers top to bottom everything that can appear in a configuration settings file.

.NET Framework Tools and Debugger .NET Framework Tools

Description and usage examples for each tool included with the framework. Some of the tools pertain more to development.

.NET Framework Configuring Applications

The title is self-explanatory. Very in-depth information regarding configuration.

.NET Framework Reference Performance Counters

Describes each .NET Framework performance counter.

.NET Framework Getting Started NET Framework System Requirements

If your organization is more diverse, you might want to look here first.

.NET Framework Deploying Applications

Provides information on deploying assemblies and the .NET Framework redistributable.
