Part III: Roles in Configuration Management

A (software) project is like a play: all roles must be filled. Some are big, some are small, but all are important.

Real people must fill the roles. Real people have personalitiesa fact of life that's almost impossible to change. Technical skills you can learn, but your personality is to a large extent fixed when you reach adulthood . Different people fill roles in different ways, and these differences may be used to advantage if the basics of team roles are known.

This part discusses the human aspect of configuration management. The focus is not on individuals, however, but on their roles in connection with software development and maintenance. Describing the roles is important to the general understanding of the work. Processes and procedures may be described thoroughly, but only when activities and tasks are connected to rolesand thereby to peopledo they become meaningful.

The roles are arranged within an organizational structure. This may, of course, vary from company to company. One or more people may fill one role, just as one person may fill one or several roles.
