Configuration management is about communication: communication between those who want items, those who produce them, and those who use them.

Items are placed under configuration managementthat is one configuration management activity. Information is attached to the items, and maintaining this information is also a configuration management activity. Facilitating usage of the information about the items is yet another activity.
