About the Author

Naeem Hashmi is a technology evangelist who has more than 22 years of experience in emerging Information Technologies research, development, and management covering a wide array of technologies such as information delivery technologies; e-business; ERP applications; data warehousing; data mining; CRM; database, Web, object and client/server technologies; enterprise application integration; and information architectures. He is the chief technology officer of Information Frameworks, an emerging Information Technology research and strategic IT consulting group.

A former technical director at Compaq/Digital for Database and Business Intelligence Engineering, the IT Group, and the SAP BW benchmark project, he directed the early SAP BW customer projects (BW l.0E, BW 1.2A, and BW 1.2B). As a senior information technology architect for the Advanced Technology and Planning Group, he led several emerging technology development initiatives within Compaq/Digital IT organizations, consulting and engineering teams, and technology vendors/partners such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft in the e-commerce and business intelligence industries.

A pioneer in ERP data warehousing even before BW was born, Naeem worked directly with SAP management and engineering team members in defining requirements for SAP BW from BW 1.0E through BW 2.0B. He was a core technical advisor to the SAP BW development team in the implementation of SAP BW 2.0 ODS and an advisor for the SAP BW 2.0A ODS pilot implementation at Hewlett-Packard.

Naeem is a widely known expert in the ERP business intelligence industry and is a frequent speaker at the industry's leading conferences: DCI DW World, DW-Institute, SAP TechEd, SAP ASUG, Oracle Open World, ERP World, and Internet/ERP Integration Technology. Companies such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Acta, Informatica, Sagent, Cognos, Brio, and ISG seek his consulting services on architecting their business intelligence solutions. Naeem works directly with senior executives as well as development team members in the architecture, design, and implementation strategies of their products.

Naeem holds a master of science degree in radiological health and environment sciences with a specialization in high-performance computing, simulation, and data mining from Washington State University. He also has a master of science degree in experimental nuclear physics and a bachelor of science degree in applied physics, chemistry, and mathematics from the University of Punjab, Pakistan.

Acknowledgments

First, I'd like to thank Stacy Hiquet, Debbie Abshier, and Jawahara Saidullah of Prima Tech for this opportunity to share my experiences in the ever-evolving industry of business intelligence.

I extend my appreciation to Steffen Fischer, the technical editor, for making his valuable time available for technical reviews of this book. Despite the ever-changing functionality in SAP BW, Steffen did an excellent job in making sure that the content remained up to date. I also thank Bob Lyfareff for his valuable suggestions in making this book interesting.

The quality and consistency in this book would have not been possible without the support of the editorial staff at Prima, especially Lorraine Cooper, and the rest of the crew who spent their time editing, organizing, and packaging the material that made the technical content easier to digest. Their support is very much appreciated.

Special acknowledgement goes to Wayne Eckerson (The Data Warehouse Institute), Kevin McDonald (Compendit Inc.), Ray Bachert (Microsoft), Scott Pietroski (Integration-Technology), Charlene Mathias (Eli Lilly), Michael Ullman (Integration-Technology), P.V. Rao (QwestCyber.Solutions), and Dan Spaulding (KPMG LLP Consulting), who reviewed the initial book draft and gave their honest opinions. I also acknowledge support from Acta, arcplan, Hummingbird, Informatica, and SAP for providing material needed for the book.

A very special thanks goes to my wife, Debra Norton, for her patience, encouragement, and support in writing this book.

Last but not least, I'd like to thank you, the readers of this book, who have been waiting for a long time. The SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW) is still evolving rapidly, and writing about a moving target is not an easy task. I feel that the content of this book will not only provide you with what the SAP BW product was or is but also what it will be in the coming years. Enjoy!
