Acknowledgments

Over the years, I've probably read hundreds of acknowledgments in books just like this one. Only now do I fully comprehend the depth of gratitude all those authors were expressing. Writing a technical reference is an extremely challenging undertaking. It takes an enormous amount of time, patience, and persistence while impacting everyone near and dear to the author.

I'd like to thank my loving, supportive, and patient bride Christine who has done so much to make this book possible. Thanks for all the meals delivered to my desk, the supportive words, and immense patience. You are a wonderful eternal partner. I could not have done this without you. Thanks to my children, Lindsey, Tyson, Amanda, Jennifer, and Sarah, who sacrificed six months of "quality time" with their father while I was distracted with writing. I look forward to catching up on the Father/Son and Daddy/Daughter dates.

To Matt David, my technical editor, thanks for reading every line and for reviewing the code. You are an amazingly talented and professional developer. To Sergei Ivanov, who has been so instrumental in this book and in the development of Integration Services, thanks for your help forming the ideas and writing the sample profile transform. To Mike Blaszczak, thanks for your friendship and mentoring. Thanks for your insight and guidance into how to write a technical book. To Ashvini Sharma, thanks for your constant words of support and encouragement, especially toward the end. To the rest of the Integration Services team, thanks for such a cool product without which there would be no need for a book.

Thanks to Scott Turner, Mark Durley, and Gunther Beersaerts for your ad hoc chapter reviews and feedback.

To the folks at Sams, Neil Rowe, Mark Renfrow, and Karen Annett, thanks for your patience and hard work. Karen, thanks for the copy editing; it always amazed me how accurate and consistent your suggested changes were.

Thanks to Kamal Hathi, Bill Baker, and Tom Casey, my managers and general managers, for giving me support and a little extra space as I wrote. Thanks to Euan Garden for the long hours of white board discussions that started it all. Thanks to Richard Waymire for your friendship, peer mentoring, and asking me to write this book.

Thanks to Scott Stout for your friendship and support and Craig Osterloh for saving me from the precipice of a tax accounting career.

Finally, thanks to mom and dad for not stopping at five.
