Chapter 10: Using Networking

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Networking brings a vastly enlarged world of computing to your Mac, giving you access to all the computers, printers, and other devices to which you are connected and have permission to access.

Using a network and its resources is no harder than accessing the hard disk, printer, or Internet connection that is directly connected to your Mac. Your network connection can be either wired or wireless. You’ll seldom notice the difference between the two, other than that the hardware is different and that a wireless network may perform more slowly than a wired network.

In this chapter, you’ll see how to access other computers and printers over a LAN, how to let others access your Mac and its resources, and how to access your Mac remotely, either across a LAN or over the Internet.
