Overview

The information on your Mac—documents, e-mail, photographs, music, and applications—is stored in files. So that your files are organized and can be found more easily, they are kept in folders, and folders can be placed in other folders for further segmentation. For example, a folder labeled “Movies” contains folders for Business, Family, and Personal. The Family folder contains folders for Events and Vacations. The Events folder contains a Mountain Mystery Hike folder, which in turn contains the folders and component files of a movie. Such a set of files and folders is shown in the Movies folder in Figure 3-1.

In this chapter, you’ll see how to create, use, and manage files and folders like these. (In this chapter the term “objects” refers to any mix of files, folders, and disk drives.)
