Leave Mac OS X

 < Day Day Up >

You can leave Mac OS X in five ways depending on what you want to do:

Quicksteps: Leaving Mac OS X Quickly

If you have a PowerBook or iBook, you can press the Power button to display the Shut Down dialog box (shown here). You can also display this dialog box by pressing the power key (if your keyboard has one) or by pressing control+eject or control+f12 (depending on your Mac).

Click Sleep to put your Mac to sleep, or click Shut Down to shut your Mac down. Alternatively, press s for sleep or return for shut down.

Sleep

Putting your Mac to sleep suspends Mac OS X and all applications you had open. Putting your Mac to sleep is much faster than shutting it down, and waking it is much faster than starting again.

To put your Mac to sleep, open and click Sleep. Your Mac’s display will go dark and the hard drive will stop running.

To reawaken your Mac, press any key or click the mouse.

Log Out

Log out means to close the active applications and network connections and to close your user account but leave your Mac running. To log out:

  1. Open and click Log Out Your Name, where Your Name is your user name (for example, Log Out Lisa). Mac OS X will display this confirmation message box:

  2. Click Log Out. Your Mac will display the Login screen, from which you or another user can log in.

Note

Instead of clicking Log Out, you can wait 120 seconds, and then Mac OS X will log you out automatically. This automatic logout helps ensure that you don’t stay logged in even if you forget to click Log Out in the confirmation dialog box.

Switch Users

Switch users means to leave the active applications and network connections active and keep your user account active while you let another user use the Mac. To switch users:

Note

If your user name doesn’t appear at the right end of the menu bar, your Mac isn’t configured for Fast User Switching, and you can’t switch users. See “Turn On Fast User Switching” in Chapter 8 for instructions on turning on Fast User Switching.

  1. Click your user name at the right end of the menu bar.

  2. Click the name of the desired user.

  3. If Mac OS X prompts you for the user’s password, enter it and click Log In, as shown here:

Mac OS X will hide your desktop and will display the desktop for the user you selected. Your user session and applications continue to run, but they are hidden until you switch users back to your account.

Restart

The Restart command is another way of leaving Mac OS X—and coming back immediately. Restart shuts down Mac OS X so that no information is lost, and it then restarts Mac OS X. Restarting is usually done when there is a problem that restarting Mac OS X will fix. You may also need to restart Mac OS X after installing or updating system software or applications. To restart:

  1. Open and click Restart. Mac OS X will display the confirmation dialog box shown here:

  2. Click Restart. Mac OS X will close all running applications, restart itself, and then display the login screen.

Shut Down

Shutting down means to log off all users and shut down your Mac. To shut down:

  1. Open and click Shut Down. Mac OS X will display the confirmation dialog box shown here:

  2. Click Shut Down. Mac OS X will close all running applications, close itself, and then turn off your Mac.
