Protocol Preferences Tab

Name Resolution Order (Windows 9x Only)

  • Default Value: NWHOST, SLP, DNS, DHCP, NDS, BIND, SAP

  • Range: Any combination of the previous entries in any order.

  • Description: The list specifies the order in which namespace providers are used to attempt to resolve service names . All configured name service providers (NSP) are queried asynchronously in order to resolve a service name to an address. They are first queried with a cache flag that allows NSPs who maintain a cache to attempt to resolve the name. If no NSP resolves the name, they are queried again without the cache flag, allowing NSPs to attempt to resolve the name on the network. The client either waits the time specified by the Name Resolution Timeout value or until all the queried NSPs respond with a NOT_FOUND or NO_MORE status.

Preferred Network Protocol (Windows 2000/XP Only)

  • Default Value: IP

  • Range: IP, IPX

  • Description: The client will wait up to one quarter of the Name Resolution Timeout value to resolve the specified name to an address of the preferred network type.

Protocol Component Settings (Windows 2000/XP Only)

  • Default Value: CLSID for this namespace provider service.

  • Range: N/A

  • Description: This list specifies the order in which name service providers (NSPs) are queried to resolve a network name.
