Chapter Fourteen: Boost Your Output and Lower Your Stress with Productivity Tools

Highly successful programmers don t work any harder than average programmers: They just work smarter and faster.

You have the power to more than double your programming productivity on the job ”right now ”if only you ll wield it. This chapter-will teach you how.

Why Are Some Programmers So Productive?

Highly successful programmers don t work any harder than average programmers: They just work smarter and faster. They set out to understand how their client s business works ”to master the flow of production from one department to the next . They continually hone their coding skills, consciously aiming at writing simple and efficient (and therefore elegant) code. And ”just as important ”they boost their output by searching out, and asking their manager to provide them with, the powerful hardware and software corporate programming productivity tools that are on the market.

I find it mystifying that the use of productivity tools is such a minority practice in the hundreds of IT shops in which I have worked or consulted. I ve observed , over and over, that only a few programmers in any information technology department bother to take advantage of these brain-multipliers. Most of the programmers I see in action don t use, and certainly don t ask for, proven productivity tools that would multiply their performance.

Why is that? My conclusion, after forty years of observing thousands of programmers in action, is that a programmer s pride in his own brainpower is (ironically) what sometimes keeps him from using his brain. Evidently, most corporate programmers have convinced themselves that they can solve even byzantine programming problems without the help of anyone , thank you ”and, most particularly, without the help of the computer itself.
