About Customizing Your View by Adding and Removing Layers

No doubt you have some favorite places in the world. Google Earth enables you to save those places in a convenient location so you can immediately fly to them with a double-click, as you'll see in this task.

Save Your Favorite Locations

Go to a Location

Visit any location on Google Earth as you would normally.

Save the Location

From the Edit menu, choose Save to My Places to save the currently displayed location as a favorite. You can also save a location if the location is in the list of places in the left pane. To do it, highlight the location in the top-left part of the screen and choose Edit, Save To My Places from the menu bar.

The location vanishes from the top part of the screen and is instead displayed in the Places panel on the left side of the screen, underneath My Places. An icon is also displayed next to the name of that location on the map on the right side of the Google Earth screen, with the name of the place next to it. If necessary, zoom out a little to see the icon.

Fly to a Favorite

No matter where you are in the world, you can immediately fly to one of your favorite locations. In the Places panel on the left side of the screen, locate the favorite destination to which you want to fly, and double-click it. You immediately fly to that location.

Edit a Favorite

You can edit and annotate your favorite locations by changing a location's name, adding notes about it, and changing the icon that appears next to it in the Places panel and on the map in Google Earth. Right-click the favorite location in the Places panel on the left side of the screen and choose Edit. In the Edit Placemark dialog box that opens, you can change the name and add a description. Click OK when you're done. The description shows up next to the favorite in the Places panel.

Tip

To change the icon that displays next to your favorite location in the Places panel, enable the Advanced check box; the Edit Placemark dialog box expands to show three tabs. Click the Style tab and choose the color and size of the icon you want to display. You can also change the color of the text label in this tab. Alternatively, click the icon to the right of the Name field at the top of the Edit Placemark dialog box and choose a new icon from the list that appears.

Temporarily Remove a Favorite

In the Places panel, favorite places have check boxes next to them. If you temporarily don't want a favorite to show up on the map in Google Earth, uncheck the box. The favorite still shows up in the Places panel, but it won't be labeled on the map section of Google Earth. You can still fly to that location by double-clicking it in the Places panel.

Permanently Remove a Favorite

To permanently remove a favorite, right-click it and select Delete from the contextual menu. The favorite is removed from the Places panel and from the map in Google Earth.
