Add Transactions (Win)

Because entering security transactions can be a bit involved, Quicken uses special dialogs to walk you through the process. These dialogs ensure that you will enter all of the information that Quicken needs to properly track the transaction.

On Windows, begin by clicking to select the investment account in the Account Bar. Towards the top of the window, click Enter Transactions.

The Investment Transactions dialog appears. The contents of this dialog will change, depending on the investment action selected from the Enter transaction pop-up menu, and whether the account is a single mutual fund or a portfolio account. This example is for purchasing shares of a stock in a portfolio account. Of course, if you want another kind of transaction, you should choose it from the Enter transaction pop-up menu.

1.
Choose Buy Shares Bought from the investment transactions pop-up menu.

2.
Enter the Transaction date .

3.
Choose the security you want to purchase from the Security name pop-up menu. This menu lists all the securities you have previously bought. If you are buying a security that is new to your portfolio, click the Add New Security button at the bottom of the pop-up menu, and Quicken will walk you through a quick Wizard to add the new security.

4.
Enter the number of shares you have bought in the Number of shares field.

5.
Enter the price you paid per share in the Price paid field.

6.
If you paid a broker commission, enter its dollar amount in the Commission field. Quicken calculates the cost of the transaction (number of shares times price per share plus commission) and places the result in the Total cost field.

7.
If you want to add a memo, type it in the Memo field.

8.
The money to pay for your purchase can either come from the cash balance in your portfolio account or from another Quicken account, such as your checking account. If it comes from the portfolio cash balance, in the Use cash for this transaction section , click From this account's cash balance . If the money comes from another account, click From , and then choose the account from the pop-up menu next to it.

9.
If you want to save the current transaction and immediately enter another, click Enter/New. If you are done entering transactions, click Enter/Done. The investment transaction is saved, and it appears in the Transactions tab of the investment account.
