Transfer Money

You often need to transfer money between accounts. For example, when you write a check to make a payment to your credit card account, money flows out of the checking account and into the credit card account, decreasing the credit card's balance. Quicken makes it easy to update both accounts with one transaction so you don't have to enter the same transaction in both registers. To accomplish this, Quicken uses a special kind of category called transfer categories , which refer to other Quicken accounts. Quicken creates transfer categories automatically when you create an account. You can view the transfer categories in your data file by choosing Tools > Category List (Lists > Category & Transfers > List) and scrolling to the bottom of the resulting window. The transfer categories are the ones enclosed in the square brackets [] .

On Windows, you'll find a Transfer button at the top of every account register.

Click the Transfer button. The Transfer dialog appears.

Using the Transfer Money From pop-up menu, choose the source account for the transfer, then choose the destination account for the transfer from the To Account pop-up menu. Quicken fills in the Date and Description fields for you, but you can change them if you like. Finally, enter the Amount of the transfer, then click OK.

On the Mac, choose Activities > Transfer Money > Between Registers. From the resulting dialog, enter the Amount and choose the From and To accounts. Quicken fills in the Date and Payee fields for you, but you can change them if you want. Click Transfer to record the transaction.
