Using Color and Gradient Fills

You can fill shapes created in Keynote with solid colors, color gradients, or an image (see the next section for image fills). A color fill replaces the interior of the object with a solid color, picked from the Colors window. A gradient fill creates a smooth blend from one color that you set to a second color. You can fill any of the drawing objects created in the Keynote Shapes menu, and you can also fill the shapes (bars, columns , pie slices, and so on) in Keynote charts . You use the Graphic Inspector to apply fills to shapes ( Figure 5.31 ).

Figure 5.31. The Graphic Inspector lets you apply the different kinds of fills to objects.

To fill a shape with a color

2.

The color will appear in the color well in the Graphic Inspector, and will fill the selected shape.

Tip

  • If the Fill section in the Graphic Inspector is inactive, you accidentally deselected the shape that you want to fill. Click the shape to select it again.

Figure 5.34. When you choose Gradient Fill, you'll need to set two colors and the angle of the gradient.

The Gradient Fill section has two color wells, for the beginning and end colors of the gradient, plus controls that allow you to swap the two colors and change the angle of the gradient.

5.
In the Colors window, select the color that you want to use for the fill.

The color will appear in the color well at the top of the Colors window.

6.
Click in the color well in the Colors window, and drag the color to the first color well in the Gradient Fill section of the Graphic Inspector.

7.
Repeat steps 5 and 6, but drag the color to the second color well in the Graphic Inspector.

The shape is filled with the gradient ( Figure 5.35 ).

Figure 5.35. This object is filled with a smooth gradient from light to dark.

8.
(Optional) To swap the two gradient colors, click the swap arrow in the Gradient Fill section of the Graphic Inspector.

9.
To change the gradient angle, use the angle controls.

Tip

  • You can adjust the transparency of just a color fill (or just the stroke; see "Modifying Image Borders," later in this chapter) by using the Opacity slider in the Colors window. It's a cool trick that lets you change the transparency of the fill while leaving the stroke solid. Instead of using the Opacity slider in the Graphic Inspector, you use the slider on the Colors window and the opacity setting affects the color fill or stroke, not the entire object.
