Chapter15.Frame Relay Design Solutions

Chapter 15. Frame Relay Design Solutions

Frame Relay is a versatile and flexible technology where the provisioned parameters define the way that the service can be manipulated by both the service provider and the enterprise. Provider manipulation is beyond the scope of this chapter, although the enterprise will receive the type of service (ToS) and further ability to manipulate the service, based on the design parameters, topologies, and provisioned parameters. In this chapter, you learn about the following:

  • Design parameters of Frame Relay

  • User-Network Interface (UNI) and Network-to-Network Interface (NNI)

  • Frame Relay topologies

  • User and Frame Relay switch under congestion

  • Frame Relay performance criteria

  • Frame Relay and upper-layer protocols

  • Local Management Interface (LMI)

  • Inverse Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

Traffic shaping techniques that do not require any specific design by the enterprise are discussed in Chapter 16, "Basic and Advanced Frame Relay Configurations," and Chapter 17, "Frame Relay Troubleshooting."

To provide an effective Frame Relay service for the enterprise, the Frame Relay network has to solve two main issues: reduce the response time and prevent possible congestion and oversubscription. In the Frame Relay design stage of an enterprise network, it is important to define the design parameters, structural decisions, and both UNI and NNI solutions. It is also important to anticipate the possible multicast and compression solutions, and voice and fragmentation decisions.
