Troubleshooting

Two things about troubleshooting are important to keep in mind. First, you want to try to avoid it. Second, if you've not managed to avoid the problem, you need to start at the top and work your way down in order of complexity. Here's a list of troubleshooting tips beginning with those that help you avoid pitfalls:

  • Never click the Apply button until you have reviewed the changes you just made.

  • Always apply one change at a time; then test that change.

  • Always run the Firewall Client. If a particular workstation is having a problem but no others are, start by checking IP configuration and that the Firewall Client is connected on the workstation.

  • Make sure that the workstations are not infected with spyware and aren't running another firewall software on the workstation before you begin troubleshooting.

  • If a website cannot be viewed, it might be a DNS issue. Verify your DNS settings on both the server and the workstation.

  • If an SSL website cannot be viewed, it might be using an alternative SSL port. Add the appropriate SSL port to the tunnel port range on your server.

  • If a web application will not connect, it is probably an authentication issue. Configure the application for direct access.

  • Use the logs to determine at what point the client request is being denied.
