Changing Acrobat's display settings can dramatically increase the accessibility of all PDF documents, especially for those with vision disabilities . Something simple like making the page zoom display larger makes all PDF documents easier to read. Along with changing the view, you can set the Preferred Text Size setting to be larger.

The default page layout is Automatic . If the viewer prefers viewing documents as he does books, simply change the Page Layout preferences. These little tweaks to your PDF make a big difference to those with disabilities.

Note that changing Acrobat preferences changes how Acrobat displays all documents, unless the document creator has set specific Initial View settings. This task is designed for someone who wants to change his default settings for all documents. For details on how to change the initial view settings for just one document, see 1 Create a PDF in Acrobat .

TIP

Changing the initial magnification and page layout of an individual PDF document (using the Document Properties command in the File menu) can dramatically increase the accessibility of a document you have created, especially for those with visual impairments. Something simple like making the initial page zoom display larger makes the information displayed much easier to read. Of course, increasing the magnification means that a smaller portion of the document is displayed, which requires more scrolling. You have to judge where the balance lies between making the document easier to read versus requiring more scrolling. One benefits those with visual impairments, whereas the other benefits those with motion impairments.

1.
Set Zoom Page Display

The Preferences command is found under the Edit menu (Windows) or the Acrobat menu (Mac OS). In the Preferences dialog box, select Page Display from the list on the left. This determines how your document pages are displayed when opened in Acrobat. Under the Magnification section, change the Default Zoom pop-up to a larger magnification, such as 200%. After you click OK , the next file you open in Acrobat appears at 200% rather than the default of Fit Page . Some of your choices, other than a percentage, are Fit Visible, Fit Width , and Actual Size .

2.
Check Page Layout

The default page layout is a single page. You might want to change the layout to match how it looks when reading a book by choosing facing pages. Other page layout choices are Continuous, Continuous-Facing, Facing , and Single Page . Depending on your audience, select an appropriate page layout.

3.
Alter Page Display Options

Under the Page Display area are a variety of check boxes for setting options for the display of the PDF page. If you are sending the file to a printer, check the Display Art, Trim, Bleed Boxes for printer approval. If you have a laptop or LCD screen, check the Use CoolType box so the text is more legible. When using transparency in the PDF, check the Display Transparency Grid so the viewer understands that the page is transparent.

TIP

Change the zoom size for kids as well. That way, the larger print is easier for beginning readers to see.

There are various other options to select from. If you're using large images, you can choose to not have them shown to save time when opening a file. Another item you can set is the resolution. If your file is going to be viewed only on a computer screen, set the resolution to 72 (screen or monitor resolution).
