After you set the security for a PDF, you can always go back in and adjust the permissions options. If other people are accessing the file, you might want to protect just how much they can do to the PDF file. After you check the Use a Password to Restrict Printing and Editing of the Document and Its Security Settings , you have to enter a different password for the permissions. The first password you entered was just to open the file.

Under the Permissions options, you can set the Printing Allowed ( None, Low , or High Resolution ). Here you can set whether any printing is allowed and the resolution of the printing you permit.

In the Changes Allowed options, you set how much can be edited, deleted, copied , or commented on in the document. Other check box options are Enable Copying of Text, Images, or Other Content and Enable Text Access for Screen Reader Devices for the Visually Impaired .

1.
Change Security Settings

Under the File menu, select Document Properties . In the Document Properties dialog box, select the Security tab and click the Change Settings button. This opens the Password Security - Settings dialog box.

2.
Restrict Printing and Editing

Click the Use a Password to Restrict Printing and Editing of the document and Its Security Settings check box and enter a password in the Permissions Password field.

3.
Set Printing Options

Under the Printing Allowed pop-up menu, select the type of printing you want to allow for this PDF. Select None, Low Resolution (150 dpi) , or High Resolution .

4.
Choose Changes Allowed Options

From the Changes Allowed pop-up menu, select how much editing you want to allow for this file. Select None; Inserting, Deleting, and Rotating Pages; Filling In Form Fields and Signing; Commenting, Filling In Form Fields, and Signing ; or Any Except Extracting Pages . The final two check boxes let you select whether to permit copying areas of the PDF and to enable text access for the screen reader for visually impaired users.

TIP

When setting up permissions on your file, select your options wisely. For example, if you're sending a file that contains high-quality photographs, allow printing only at low resolution. This prevents the viewer from printing and possibly repurposing your photographs without your permission.
