The Comments pane organizes and keeps track of all comments made in a PDF document during the review process. Unlike other navigation panes in Acrobat, which are displayed along the left side of the document window, when you click the Comments tab, the Comments pane is displayed at the bottom of the document window. This horizontal orientation makes a lot more sense for displaying potentially long comments.

The Comments pane .

Starting on the left side of the Comments pane are the Expand All and Collapse All elements buttons. Next to that are up and down arrow buttons which, when clicked, move the focus to the previous or next comment.

The Reply button attaches a response to a reviewer's comments. Select the comment you want to reply to and click the Reply button. Acrobat populates your reply comment with your name, the comment it is regarding, and the date and time. You can then add a response by clicking to the right of the comment header information ( name , title, and so on) and typing your reply.

The trash can icon deletes selected comments from the list. Select the comment you want to delete and click the trash can.

Set Status sets the comment's review or migration status. For review comments, they can be marked as Accepted, Rejected, Cancelled , or Completed . For migration comments, they can be marked Not-Confirmed or Confirmed .

The check mark can be used to indicate almost anything you want it to. For example, you can mark any comments you have yet to read or even keep track of comments you have already read.

Under the Show menu on the Comments menu, you can choose to hide or show comments and show comments by type, reviewer, status, or checked state. You can also choose to show the Comments and Drawing Markup toolbars .

Display comments by a specific type.

Comments can be sorted by type, page, author, date, color , check mark status, or status by person in the Comments pane. Simply click the Sort By command to make your sorting selection and Acrobat reorganizes the comments in the order you've chosen .

You can also search all the comments for a particular word or phrase. Click the Search comments button to open the Search PDF panel. Enter a word or phrase to search for, and click the radio button next to Whole Word Only or Case Sensitive if you need look for specific words or cases. Click the Search Comments button to have Acrobat search through all the comments for the word or phrase and display them in the Results window. Click the result to locate the comment in the document.

The Search Comments window.

The Comments pane also enables you to print the comments from you PDF document. Select the Print Comments command to do one of the following: Print Comments Summary, Create PDF of Comments Summary , or More Options to bring up the Summarize Options dialog box.

Other functions the Comments pane can perform are importing and exporting comments, summarizing comments, and launching the Track Reviews window. Click the Options button to display the various comment options.
