As of DB2 Version 6, it became possible to create additional functions and data types to supplement the built-in function and data types supplied with DB2. User-defined functions and types give users the ability to effectively customize DB2 to their shop requirements. The ability to customize is potentially very powerful. It also can be quite complex and requires detailed knowledge, additional application development skills, and administrative dexterity.
