Acknowledgments

I want to thank God for the opportunity to work with so many talented people, past and present. They gave generously of their time and talent, even as God gives generously to all of us.

I want to thank my wife Cheryl and our children (Ed and his wife Erin, and their daughter Vivian; Kate and her husband Hugh and their boys Jarvis and Linus; Ian and his fiancée Jamie; and Jeremy). The writing of this book and the many others that preceded it could not have been possible without their love, encouragement, patience, and, yes, the technical questions that come with having a family of technology fans.

Any technology book worth reading is the product of many hands. First of all, I want to thank Scott Mueller for his more than 20 years' efforts to create the finest computer hardware reference books on the planet. I have found Scott's expertise, authoritative knowledge, and desire to keep learning an inspiration ever since I first read the original edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs. Scott's research on processors, memory, hard disk interfaces, and other topics helped immensely in developing many chapters of this book, showing us the level of information and expertise necessary to cover servers in a way worthy of the Upgrading and Repairing brand.

I want to thank Rick Kughen at Que for the opportunity to turn the vision of an authoritative book on server technology into a reality. It's been a long road, Rick, but I hope you agree it's been worth it!

I want to thank Todd Green for overseeing this and other recent Upgrading and Repairing series titles. Todd, who lives not too far from Scott in the Chicagoland area, has a great vision for the series and has worked tirelessly to shepherd this book through to completion.

A great team of authors worked with me to create this book: Barrie Sosinsky, a contributing editor for Windows IT Pro, founder of the Sosinsky Group, a Windows Server and Sun Solaris expert with more than 30 books and hundreds of magazine articles to his credit; Ed Tittel, a contributor to more than 130 technology book titles and series editor of the ExamCram 2 series for Que; and David Eytchison, a veteran technical editor at Que. Many thanks to Barrie, Ed, and David for outstanding material.

Our efforts are backed by a great team of publication specialists at Que, including development editor Todd Brakke, copy editor Kitty Jarrett, project editor Tonya Simpson, and publishing coordinator Sharry Gregory. Barrie Sosinsky doubled as a tech editor, joining Robert Shimonski, David Prowse, and Shawn Porter in checking technical topics for accuracy. Thanks for your work!

I'd also like to thank the associate publisher, Greg Wiegand, and the proofreaders, graphics specialists, and the rest of the gang at Que for helping this book to be the accurate, readable, and enjoyable reference book you've come to expect from Que.
