The goal of this book is to give game developers a reasonably in-depth introduction in lay language to the legal issues they will face in their business, from choosing a business entity to finance, human resources, intellectual property protection, publishing contract negotiation, and licensing. I have gone into a lot of detail in this book because
having worked with developers, I know that most of you are smart enough to understand the concepts; and
having worked with developers, I know that most of you are smart enough to know that this book does not make you capable of handling your own legal affairs. Just as a good cookbook does not make you Julia Child, this book does not make you a lawyer or even close to it.
This book can help you in two important ways: it can make you more efficient when dealing with your lawyers ; and it can sensitize your legal radar so that you recognize danger before it blows you up.
I am trusting you to be big boys and girls and hire lawyers. And not just one lawyer; you'll probably need different lawyers for different situations like general business affairs, human resources, securities, taxes, contract negotiation, bankruptcy, and litigation. You are not a lawyer, and unless you want to learn a new definition of pain as you are slowly digested over a period of a thousand years , you won't try to act like one. I understand that no one likes to hire or pay lawyers, but no one likes going to the gym, eitheryou do it because it's how you stay healthy .
