Bypass the Hard Drive

If Windows does not load, the hard disk that holds the Windows software files may have a problem. To isolate the problem to the disk drive, try restarting the computer with your Windows software CD or an emergency boot disk in the CD drive or the floppy disk drive. If the computer starts and reads startup code from the CD or floppy, look for a problem on your hard disk.

Begin by restarting and using the BIOS Setup utility to see if it can detect the hard drive and identify its characteristics. If not, remove the old drive and install a new one, or move the jumper on the drive to change it from Master to Slave, and install the new drive as the Master and then reinstall Windows on the new drive.
