Viewing Pictures

If you open the folder where the images downloaded, you can view a thumbnail of each downloaded image by simply selecting the image file, as shown in Figure 38.8. Beneath each image thumbnail, the information about the selected image is displayed. This information shows you the format, dimensions, and size of the image.

Tip

If you select to view View image from book Filmstrip or the View image from book Thumbnails options, you can see multiple thumbnails at once in the folder.

At the top of the Windows Explorer folder that holds the images are several picture-specific options you can select to make viewing an entire directory of images easy. There are also options to order prints online, set the selected image as the desktop background, or copy the selected images to a CD.

Viewing images as a slide show

If you select the View as a slide show option from the Picture Tasks section of the Windows Explorer window, then the images in the selected directory are shown at full-screen resolution. In the upper-right corner is a small toolbar of buttons that you can use to Start, Pause and Exit slide show mode. There are also buttons that you can use to move back and forth between the next and previous images.

Tip

You can also use the arrow keys to move back and forth through the slide show images. The Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L keys are used to rotate the current image clockwise or counterclockwise. If you rotate the image, the rotated image saves over the original image.

Viewing images as a screen saver

You can also view the downloaded image as a screen saver that appears when the computer is idle for a specified amount of time.

To view a folder of downloaded images as a screen saver, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on the desktop and select the Properties menu option to access the Display Settings dialog box.

  2. Select the Screen Saver tab, shown in Figure 38.9 and choose the My Pictures Slideshow option.

  3. Click on the Settings button to access a dialog box of settings for this screen saver, shown in Figure 38.10. Using these settings you can determine how long the images remain before changing. You can also set the size of the images and whether you can use the keyboard arrows to move back and forth through the displayed images.
