Appendix A: Plug-Ins

Overview

The power of Photoshop is multiplied by the many third-party plug-ins available. These plug-ins integrate themselves into Photoshop and operate as components every bit as much as those that originally come from Adobe.

A plug-in can operate as a filter on the filter s menu, affecting the current image, or as an add-in that gives new functionality such as the ability to import and export in new file formats.

There are far more plug-ins than can be covered in any appendix, and new ones are being written every week. This appendix showcases some interesting and useful ones tested with Photoshop CS: Eye Candy 4000, Image Doctor, and the Windows-only Impressionist filter.

Some plug-ins are sold, and others are given away free. Trial and demonstration versions with limited functionality are often available for testing before purchase. As such, you are always encouraged to shop around for the best deal on the functions that you need to perform. Internet searches for Photoshop plug-ins or Photoshop filters provide many sources.
