Identify Potential Requirements (Process Notes 3.1)

Not all requirements are discovered as a result of setting a context and working toward a logical and connected partitioning. Instead, many individual requirements are discovered while trawling for knowledge.

This process analyzes the potential requirements discovered as a result of trawling. For each potential requirement:

  • Write a description using the form "The product shall . . ." followed by the action that the product must take.

  • Give the requirement a unique number.

  • Review the product context and see if you can identify which use case(s) this requirement is connected to.

  • Record the source (preferably names of people) of the requirement.

  • Record the requirement rationale. Why is this requirement important to the business?

Refer to Chapters 7, 8, and 10 for more guidance in writing requirements.
