Free Space Fragmentation

 < Day Day Up >

As well as file fragmentation, then, free space on the disk also becomes broken up, further aggravating the situation. When a new file is created, it may not be able to find a large enough block of contiguous free space, resulting in its being written to the disk in a fragmented state. As free space and file fragmentation takes hold, the condition worsens rapidly, and the user becomes aware of deterioration in performance. In addition to taking longer to open files, users begin to complain of overlong reboots and even backups taking much longer than before. A U.S. District Court site in Maine serves as an example of what can happen as a result of fragmentation. This site reported that a server was taking 20 minutes to shut down during reboot. The system manager said that years of experience had convinced him that system deterioration was a fact of life on NT and Windows 2000; however, when he loaded Executive Software's Diskeeper on all his servers and workstations, reboots returned to normal, performance sped up substantially, and reliability improved.
