Overall Direction

 < Day Day Up >

The overall direction that this material takes, then, is determining how best to manage and optimize the performance of the multitude of hard drives that exist within the enterprises of today. Important issues include server disk management, managing storage assets, backing up, managing free space, managing fragmentation, maintaining high disk performance, guarding against and preventing disk failure, and future developments with regard to hard disks. It is also important to note that this text concentrates entirely on Windows-based operating systems and file systems. Within that context, it speaks primarily about Windows 2000, as that is now the primary Windows server platform; however, the book also covers Windows 9x, NT, and XP in brief, as well as Windows Server 2003. In terms of file systems, NTFS is emphasized, but FAT and FAT 32 are also covered in some detail.
